About Liberty Leading the People
Not to be confused with the French Revolution of 1789, Liberty Leading the People commemorates the July Revolution of 1830 which led to the overthrow of the reigning French monarch, King Charles X. The dramatic scene depicts a woman – the goddess of Liberty – emerging from the barricade with the flag of the French Revolution in one hand while brandishing a bayonetted musket with the other as she leads the people forward over the bodies of the fallen. Delacroix did not participate in this revolution. He wrote to his brother that, “…And if I haven't fought for my country at least I'll paint for her." The painting was first exhibited at the official Salon of 1831.

His agitated brushwork, color harmonies and composition influenced the development of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painting.
