Did you know?

01

Good things come in threes! There are actually three versions of the work. The first version was painted in 1888 in Arles. The second was a “repetition” of the original scale while the third was a “réduction” in smaller size. Both replicas were painted in 1889.

They are now part of the collection of the Van Gogh Museum (Amsterdam), the Art Institute of Chicago and the Musée d’Orsay (Paris).

02

What’s wrong with the walls? When writing about the painting, Van Gogh described the color of the walls as being pale violet . They are now blue. It is most likely the result of r ed pigments that faded over time

Nothing is perfectly straight here: the room was not rectangular, but trapezoid in shape with an obtuse angle in the left corner of the front wall and an acute angle at the right.
